Neil Dawson : City Central
First, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped make the NY:LON tour such a success. It was great to visit so many galleries and I am very grateful for all the hard work that was put in, both during and surrounding the shows.
I hope this new collection builds on those strong foundations. Many of the elements of previous work are still present the bold colours, the urban backdrop and of course the taxis! But I also hope to have developed and evolved the work in other aspects.
In particular I have been working on trying to capture and incorporate an element of speed. The pace of modern life is hectic and nowhere is this more striking than the dynamic cities of London and New York. In both 'Light Fantastic' and 'Going Up West' I hope to evoke a real sense of movement and energy by blurring objects and light.
In contrast 'The New Yorker' is a more sedate and serene scene the distant viewpoint taking it away from the hustle and bustle of the street. The panorama is a classic Manhattan view that incorporates several iconic buildings including the New Yorker Building and the Empire State Building as well as the beautiful twinkling lights of the city.
'City Central' is one of my favourite pictures that I have painted and again I hope it offers something a little different to previous images. I am hoping to capture a slightly changed atmosphere that highlights a more gritty and raw side to city life. With the underpass, shadowy figures and colourful neon I hope to create an edgy, intriguing and exciting environment that draws the viewer into the scene.
