Camellia - Hamish Blakely
As the title states, the beauty and presence of this woman is expressed by the exotic red tint of this glorious flower while alluding to the colour of her garment. This is a seductive play of textures and colours; the gleaming skin of her back and hips is met by the feathery trim of her richly coloured, heavy gown. The golden light illuminating her exquisite anatomy becomes more prominent against the cool greys and blues of the background. Her gentle femininity, combined with the strength in her back produce a satisfying tension that makes it very apparent that she is not there as a prop - a pretty wall flower that simply decorates and serves as a passive presence in a pretty setting. Rather, she conveys elegance and power and her world is a secret although the temptation to gently clasp her hip or touch her back is undeniable. The pulled curtain hints at some private alcove or den that adds to the feeling of mystery.
