Amalfie by Hamish Blakely

I am called to far away places when I view this piece. The striking anatomy and flesh tones, along with the richness of the chaise longue and cushion, surround this reclining woman in a regal, exotic atmosphere. Amalfi's strikingly beautiful coast on the Gulf of Salerno epitomizes the setting so appropriate for the bewitching woman in the gypsy headscarf. Her pensive gaze suggests more than aimless dreaming; there is autonomy. In her apparantly gentle, passive pose, she retains a commanding presence, provoking mystery whilst eliciting deference from the viewer.

Hamish has captured the range of different textures from the subject's skin to the soft cloth of the cushions to the firmer textures of the sofa and wooden frame. A wonderful figurative study with tactile qualities.
