This new work represents something of a departure from my earlier work. Whilst buildings and houses were the main focal point in my previous work, the people surrounding them were more incidental.
In this new collection you will see that the figures create the image. They are situated along what appears to us as an English Coastline. This is further enhanced by the seemingly chilly weather! The figures walk quickly together in couples or family groups. One may decide that this looks like a familiar holiday scene when the weather turns somewhat inclement and people are caught out by a sudden downpour. To me they share one common goal - to enjoy themselves come what may, to make the best of it. They walk together to a distant focal point, perhaps into a safe haven of warmth or indeed to carry on with their plans before the rain came.
I believe this new work has both traditional and contemporary elements. The figures are painted loosely but are representational in form, the overall effect however creates a modern feel because of the composition. The background is deliberately pale to enhance the patterned effect of the people disappearing into the distance. The aim is to convey a striking image with depth and pattern, which will hopefully sit in any home.
